The 12 Days of Non-Christmas, Christmas Movies, Part III

Well, it is our last week of our countdown, and here are my four favorite Non-Christmas, Christmas movies. I hope you enjoyed the list, and I hope your Holiday Season is magical and full of warmth and love, no matter where you are in the world!

Scrooged

Bill you magnificent Scrooge!

#4 Scrooged

For me, comedy in film has always come down to one man, Bill Murray. Sure there are funnier people that have graced the big screen, but Murray has been in some of the best comedy films of all time, like Caddyshack, Ghostbusters, Stripes, and Groundhog Day. All of these films are amazing, and also make you quickly forgive, and forget, Ghostbusters 2. But one of his best films, is our number 4 film, Scrooged. Murray takes a story that has been told more times than I care to count, and after mistaking the tree water for eggnog, I don’t really care to try to count.

Scrooged is so much fun, and I can watch it over and over again, regardless if it is Christmas time or not. Many may say that this is a very Christmas movie, and should not be on the list. But don’t forget, we have Bobcat Goldwaith with a shotgun and the Solid Gold Dancers showing off far too much nipple. (Kids, if you don’t know either reference, ask your parents, they will tell you all about it. They may even mention a time when we went to stores to buy music).

Murray, and the rest of the cast, delivers a fun, and touching film, that is perfect during the holiday season. And while there are many different versions of this classic tale, Scrooged is the gold standard and the others are just also ran’s.

The Long Kiss Good Night

Let me tell you a story, the Gridge like a mean f&*%##$!

#3 The Long Kiss Goodnight

I have a theory, that Samuel L. Jackson is the cinematic equivalent of bacon, which has a scense of cinematic irony if you have watch “Pulp Fiction”. Everything is better with bacon, and a movie is always improved when Mr. Jackson hits the screen. TLKG is your typical holiday film. Geena Davis plays a teacher/mom that is suffering from long-term amnesia. Turns out she used to be an assassin with the CIA. And with help from a cheap private investigator, played by Mr. Jackson, she begins to remember how bad she used to be. Throw in crazy explosions, more foul language than you would hear on a six-month cruse on the USS Nimitz, and Christmas in the background, and you have one of my must watches while I deck the halls. This movie also contains some of the best quotes in recent movie history

The Ref

Lady your husband ain’t dead, he’s hiding!

#2 The Ref

There may be a few movies on this list that you haven’t seen, or even heard of, and I am willing to wager that The Ref is on that very list. But, if I had to push you to make any of these movies a must watch, it is by far The Ref. Dennis Leary, in arguably his best role, plays a cat burglar on the run from the local police department, after a botched robbery in a wealthy community. He is forced to kidnapped a dysfunctional couple and pose as their marriage counselor to avoid capture. All of that creates a perfect storm of comedy with Leary dealing with the couple’s family coming over for Christmas Eve dinner, which soon becomes the holiday meal from hell. The acting is top notch, with Kevin Spacey playing a great role as the husband/momma’s boy, and the timing and delivery makes this a must watch year after year. This actual deserves a number one spot on anyone’s list that has terrible in-laws.

Die Hard

Yippie-ki-yay

#1 Die Hard

After the presents have been opened and Christmas dinner is served, it is time for Bruce Willis in his most iconic role, John Mclane. There is no real debate about this film making it to number one on the list, it is a really the film that started the idea of the Christmas, Non-Christmas movie. The lines are memorable, the action is still fantastic and it finds its way in the DVD player every year during the holidays.
